12 Birds and The Hang Glider
                                   Creating Opportunity Though Attitude

I was making my way to see Mum and Dad for dinner, driving along and enjoying the beautiful sunset, when what seemed out of nowhere a big 'Blackbird' flew into the front window of my car? I said to myself, 'this can't be happening, as it was the7th bird which had flown into my screen of my car over the last week. I thought to myself, what in the heck is going on, why are so many birds flying into my car? this is too strange I thought to myself?

I arrived at Mum and Dads for dinner and told them of my unusual and crazy experience, Mum shook her head and said 'that is too strange', Dad said 'how many'? Are you sure you weren't drinking he said jokingly.
By the time my Hang Gliding friends left for Mt Buffalo in high mountains of Victoria  two weeks later, I had a total of 12 birds of different varieties fly into my car. I was absolutely bewildered by the strange happenings.

We arrived at Mt Buffalo, a majestic four and a half feet above see level and 3, 600 feet above the fields beyond the cliffs. We set up our Hang Gliders and were feeling the excitement of the conditions which were perfect for catching thermals.

After arriving at Mt Buffalo, we gathered together to draw the smallest stick which we had gathered from the forest floor to see who would go first, I picked the smallest, which meant I would take off last. I watched as my mates had taken of before me. As always it was a beautiful and exciting sight to see a friend about to become a human bird as they ran toward the sheer drop only to become and eagle.

The sky was a deep blue on this day with small white puffy clouds forming, it looked like a wonderful day for flying the thermals . My team and I  set the Hang Glider up  and ready to take the run for the edge of the cliff 3,500 feet below. the air was full of nervous excitement, I could feel the adrenalin kick in which can sometimes be dangerous, as the last time I flew of this majestic mountain I had not attached my harness to the heart bolt which keeps you from falling from the glider. (yes incredibly, these things do happen)

Even though my mates had done a flight check on all aspects of the glider assembly, and including my own check, they missed the most crucial life saving aspect of flying, and this is what can happen when you are all pumped and the adrenalin takes over. Luckily when I ran of the edge I simply hung from the bar of the A frame and then climbed into it to attach myself while in flight. On this day we had not made the same mistake,  friends, (my team) assisting knew the procedure did a full check and recheck. I stood holding my Hang Glider in nervous anticipation looking at the majestic view in front of me, it was one thousand two hundred meters ( 3,600 feet) to the valley landing spot below.

I positioned myself for a quick run into the mild five knot wind blowing up the cliffs, I said ok lets go!  They let go of the wings Iran and leapt of this majestic mountain. I made my way out and rose an extra five hundred feet above the cliff tops, this was promising as I was hoping to find some thermal activity and glide as far as I could out of the valley below. I looked ahead and felt the warm winds brushing past my face, it was quite surreal, and even though quite unnatural for man to be flying, it felt as if I was made to fly, the feeling is quite unique and out of this world.

Things were going well, as I was about 400 meters from the take off point and the winds seemed consistent, all of a sudden, without warning my glider smashed into my back with an almighty crashing sound, I new I was in trouble as I had flown into cold air known as sink. Sink is cold air coming down from a thermal which is hot air going upwards (what goes up must come down) I knew if I did not get out of the sink, I would be splattered into the rocks and cliffs a thousand meters below me, so I pulled in the bar and dived to get some air under my wing switch would then allow me to fly out of the deathly cold sink. I dived vertically straight down for about two hundred meters and felt my wings get some pressure under them, now I can fly out of the danger so I thought.

As I turned out of the downward sink, I unintentionally turned into the hot thermal which was going upwards, WOW, it was like being in between two trains going in the opposite directions, hitting the thermal had the same effect, it had flipped my glider and myself somersaulting three to four times. The impact and power of this thermal was so great it actually broke the Hang Glider into seven parts and also snapped the bolt which was attaching me to the glider, I was now about to fall 800meters-(2.500 feet) to the rocks and cliffs below and to certain death. What happened next was out of this world and changed my life forever................

Keynote: 90minTalk
Two 3 hour workshops

Hi Paul, Just a quick email with some feedback from your Keynote & workshops in May.

Michael Hayes, the“Thinker” (TOSD) and one of the lucky recipients of your coming book, just commented to me that your sessions left his head spinning and he believes are the best event that our network has run. He has been a member for a number of  years and was on our committee last year. Also, feedback from two other attendees echoed the same sentiment - that the content was great and well-focused.
